Today, I had the privilege of sitting down with Hope Thompson, a world-champion roper whose life is a testament to faith, perseverance, and purpose. Hope’s story is inspiring—an incredible athlete whose journey intertwines with her deep relationship with God, showing us all how faith can guide us through life's highs and lows.

A Heart Full of Gratitude and Family

Hope began by sharing how she recently flew home to DeKalb, Texas, to celebrate her dad’s 79th birthday and her nephew’s first birthday. Despite her busy summer on the rodeo circuit, she made time for family, emphasizing how vital those moments are for her soul. She described her life on the road—living in a bus with her travel partners—and how she seized a rare two-day break to surprise her loved ones. 

From Horses to World Titles: A Passion Fulfilled

Growing up in northeast Texas, Hope’s love for horses was sparked by her mom, who rescued horses heard on the radio. Her father built fences, and her childhood was filled with a natural bond to animals and the outdoors. Her journey into rodeo started with junior competitions, progressed through college rodeo at McNeese State University, and culminated in her winning multiple world championships—2013 in breakaway roping, and in team roping heading in 2017, 2020, and 2022. Hope’s story highlights that her path was guided by passion, support, and divine timing. She recounted how her desire to rope and train horses led her to meet influential mentors and friends—people who became her traveling partners and helped her reach her goals.

Faith: The Foundation of Her Life

When asked about her faith, Hope shared that she was raised in a Christian household—her parents Baptist—and that prayer and church were woven into her childhood. However, her faith truly deepened later in life. She described attending a Christian rodeo camp called Sky Ranch, where she experienced profound spiritual growth. During circle time, she listened to testimonies about finding true identity in Christ, which resonated deeply with her. A pivotal moment came after listening to powerful podcasts about purpose and identity. Hope realized that her true identity was rooted in being a child of God, not just a competitor or athlete. Her faith now informs her entire approach to rodeo and life. She shared how her relationship with God is a friendship—one built on communication, trust, and daily reliance. She emphasized that God's plan is greater than our own and that trusting His timing is vital, especially during setbacks or challenges.

She dreams of one day competing at the Thomas & Mack Center and hopes that her journey inspires others to pursue their passions with purpose and faith. She emphasized that her success is not just about trophies but about sharing her faith openly, serving as a vessel for God's love, and living intentionally. Her words encourage us all to see our talents as gifts from above, meant to be used for His glory.
