I had the privilege of sitting down with Stran Smith—a man whose life story is a testament to God's grace and faithfulness. From rodeo arenas to family ranches, Stran’s journey reveals how God's love and guidance shape us through every season, especially in our darkest valleys.

A Life Rooted in Faith from Birth

Stran’s story begins with a strong foundation in faith. Growing up in Childress, Texas, with parents deeply involved in church, he recalls that he was probably going to church even before he was born. His mother, a Sunday school teacher, and his father, a Sunday school superintendent, made faith a natural part of his daily life. At the tender age of five, Stran accepted Christ—a decision driven by desire for a relationship with God. His mother’s stories from the Old Testament and her passion for Scripture planted seeds in his heart that would grow into a lifelong hunger for God's Word. Even now, he emphasizes the importance of writing God's Word on your heart early in life.

From Finding Trouble to a Faithful Servant

Stran admits that in his youth, he was a bit wild—trying to find trouble and push boundaries. Yet, through it all, his faith was present, guiding him. His journey through high school, college, and into professional rodeo was marked by moments of joy and hardship.

One of the most significant moments came after winning his first national finals in 1995. On the way to Las Vegas, his beloved grandfather, a huge supporter of his rodeo career, passed away. It was heartbreaking, and Stran wrestled with grief, guilt, and questions about God's purpose.

But that December, he attended a Christian retreat called the Walk to Emmaus. It was there that he realized he didn’t have to carry heavy burdens alone; he needed to surrender his pain to God. In 1996, tragedy struck again when Stran lost his close friend and rodeo partner, Shawn, in a accident caused by a drunk driver. The grief was overwhelming. For months, Stran felt lost, trying to rodeo through his pain, but the emotional toll was heavy. Psalm 23 became very real to him—walking through the valley of the shadow of death, knowing that goodness and mercy would follow. He realized he couldn’t bear these burdens alone; he had to give them back to God.

Stran’s experiences taught him that God's purpose is rooted in love—loving God and loving others. His early memories of Scripture, combined with life's hardships, reinforced that God's Word is a guiding light in every season.He emphasizes that our setbacks are opportunities for growth. Even when we don’t understand why certain things happen, we can trust that God's plans are for our ultimate good and His glory.
