Welcome to a heartfelt and inspiring episode of Faith Conversations! Today, I had the privilege of sitting down with Owen Parsley—a man whose life is a testament to living out faith authentically and intentionally. From coaching sports to helping lead a church, Owen’s journey is one of continuous growth, reliance on God, and a desire to impact others for His kingdom.
Owen’s story begins on a farm just outside Flandreau, where his faith was nurtured from childhood. Baptized early and raised in a family that prioritized church, Owen recalls knowing Jesus as long as he can remember. His five older siblings played a significant role in shaping his faith, and over the years, that faith became more personal and intentional—especially during college. He attended the Free Lutheran Bible College in Minneapolis and later South Dakota State University, where he earned a degree in teaching. His heart has always been in education—whether through coaching or classroom instruction—and his passion for helping others is evident in every aspect of his life.
Owen’s positive, encouraging spirit shines through his work with students and athletes. As a coach, he strives to create an environment where students feel valued and supported, reminding them of their worth rooted in God's love. His favorite verse, 2 Timothy 1:7, encapsulates his approach: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” This message of confidence and identity is central to how he encourages the young people he mentors. Beyond the sports field, Owen helps lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). His desire is to infuse every interaction with Christ’s love, demonstrating how faith can be a guiding light in both victories and setbacks.
Owen shared a poignant example of trusting God amidst personal struggles—his young son's battle with severe allergies and eczema. Sleepless nights and uncertainty tested their family, but through prayer and faith, they found comfort. Psalm 23:4 was a recent reminder for Owen: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." His reliance on God's presence provided peace and strength, reaffirming that even in the darkest valleys, God is faithful. He also reflected on the ups and downs of coaching—times of victory and disappointment—and how trusting in God's sovereignty helps him stay centered. His analogy of stepping out of the boat like Peter walking on water illustrates the importance of keeping focus on Jesus amid life's uncertainties.
As he begins seminary classes, he's preparing to lead with Scripture at the core—reminding others that faith is not just a Sunday ritual but a daily walk. He beautifully expressed that living out his faith everywhere—whether in teaching, coaching, or real estate—is a form of ministry. His heart is to be Jesus to those around him, trusting that as he steps out in faith, God will equip and empower him.
As a husband and father to four children, Owen emphasizes the importance of modeling Christ’s love within his family. Daily prayers, memorizing Scripture (Romans 8:1 is a favorite), and speaking God's promises over his children are all ways he nurtures their faith. He shared how words matter—speaking graciously and encouragingly shapes their identity and confidence in Christ.
Throughout our conversation, Owen emphasized that faith isn't compartmentalized. Instead, it’s a daily, continuous walk—whether at work, home, or in community. He advocates pausing in stressful moments to pray and seek God's guidance ("pause, pray, and proceed"), recognizing that God's strength is made perfect in our weakness. He encourages trusting that God will do immeasurably more than we can imagine when we step out in faith. Whether helping someone buy a house or coaching a team, Owen’s desire is to reflect Christ's love and truth.
Owen’s story is a beautiful reminder that following Jesus involves both faith and action. Life's challenges, uncertainties, and new seasons may be daunting, but with our eyes fixed on Jesus, we can step out confidently. His encouragement to live every day in God's presence and to be Jesus in every sphere of life inspires us all to embrace our calling—knowing that God is with us every step.
Thank you for joining us on this faith journey with Owen. His life exemplifies trusting God through every season and walking in faith with authenticity. Remember, wherever you are, God’s love and grace are enough to carry you through. Be encouraged to step out of your boat today—He is with you!
