Have you ever noticed how quickly your confidence can disappear?

One moment you're sitting in church, listening to a powerful sermon. Or maybe you've just finished reading your Bible. You've spent time in prayer, and your heart is overflowing with faith. You feel empowered. You believe every promise God has spoken over your life.

You remember Philippians 4:13:

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

You believe that nothing is impossible with God. You feel ready to take on whatever He has called you to do.

Then you step outside.

Almost immediately, something changes.

The confidence you felt in God's presence begins to fade. Fear whispers in your ear. Doubt begins asking questions.

"Who do you think you are?"

"What if you fail?"

"What if people reject you?"

"What if this isn't really God's plan?"

Suddenly, you're questioning everything you believed just moments earlier.

If you've ever experienced that, you're not alone.

The enemy knows he can't stop God's plans—but he will do everything he can to convince you to stop yourself.

The Revelation That Changed My Perspective

Recently, I was reading Called to Battle... Destined to Win by Jerry Savelle.

In one chapter, he shares an encounter with another minister who simply told him:

"Dog shadows don't bite."

At first, Jerry didn't understand what he meant. He sought the Lord, asking Him to reveal the deeper meaning behind those four simple words.

As God unfolded the lesson, everything became clear.

The devil is already defeated.

He isn't fighting from a position of victory.

He's fighting from a position of defeat.

Jesus completely disarmed Satan at the Cross.

Colossians 2:15 says:

"Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it."

That means Satan's greatest weapon is no longer power.

It's deception.

He creates shadows.

Shadows of fear.

Shadows of insecurity.

Shadows of anxiety.

Shadows of rejection.

Shadows of failure.

He wants us to react to the shadow as though it's reality.

But a shadow has no substance.

A shadow cannot hurt you.

A shadow only exists because something greater—the light—is shining.

God Is Light

One of the most beautiful truths in Scripture is found in 1 John 1:5:

"God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all."

Think about that.

Darkness doesn't overcome light.

Light overcomes darkness.

A single candle can illuminate an entire room.

The enemy wants us staring at the darkness while God invites us to look toward the Light.

The more time we spend looking at the shadow, the larger it seems.

The more time we spend looking at Jesus, the smaller the shadow becomes.

The Enemy Still Uses the Same Trick

When I heard this revelation, I immediately thought back to childhood.

Do you remember lying in bed convinced there was a monster hiding in your closet?

Or maybe something was under your bed waiting to grab your foot.

Your heart raced.

Your imagination took over.

It felt absolutely real.

Then Mom or Dad flipped on the light.

Nothing was there.

The monster disappeared because it never existed in the first place.

The enemy hasn't changed his strategy.

He still whispers frightening thoughts into our minds.

"You'll never be enough."

"No one wants to hear your story."

"You're too old."

"You're too young."

"You're not qualified."

"Someone else can do it better."

None of those thoughts sound like Jesus.

They are shadows.

Jesus said in John 10:10:

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

If a thought steals your peace...If it kills your hope...If it destroys your confidence...It didn't come from God.

I've Been Living in the Shadows. I wish I could tell you I've mastered this lesson. I haven't.
Just recently, I experienced one of the busiest and most exciting weeks I've had in a long time.
God was opening new opportunities.
He was leading me into something I'd dreamed about for years.
Instead of celebrating His faithfulness, I found myself analyzing every possible outcome.

What if it doesn't work?

What if I don’t do well?

What if I embarrass myself?

I wasn't walking in faith.

I was walking in the shadows. I gave fear permission to occupy space in my mind that belonged to God's promises.

Isn't that exactly what the enemy wants?
He can't stop God's calling on your life.
But if he can keep you afraid...If he can keep you overthinking...If he can keep you waiting for perfect conditions...

THEN YOU'LL NEVER TAKE THE FIRST STEP.

Stop Giving Shadows Authority

James 4:7 tells us:  "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Notice it doesn't say to negotiate with him.

It doesn't say to entertain fearful thoughts.

It doesn't say to analyze every lie.

It says:
Resist him.
Speak God's Word.
Declare His promises.
Stand on His truth.

Sometimes we spend so much time talking about our fears that we unintentionally magnify them.

Instead, magnify God.
The mountain may look large.
The place you are at may seem overwhelming.
The  situation may appear impossible.
The rejection may still sting.

But remember:
They are not greater than God.
The Light Always Wins

Psalm 23 begins with one of the most comforting passages in Scripture.
David writes: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me."

Notice something remarkable.
David doesn't say he walks through death.
He walks through the shadow of death.
Even in life's darkest valleys, God reminds us that what we're facing doesn't have the final word.

His presence is.
His light is.
His promises are.
The valley may feel dark, but darkness never defeats Light.
Walk Into the Light

Today, maybe your shadow looks like anxiety.
Maybe it's fear of failure.
Maybe it's fear of the unknown.
Maybe it's fear of rejection.

Maybe it's stepping into what God has placed on your heart.
Whatever it is...

Don't make a mountain out of a shadow.  Bring it into the Light. Declare God's Word over your life.
Remember who you are.
YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM.
YOU ARE NOT DEFEATED.
YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.

YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD.
YOU ARE MORE THAN A CONQUEROR THROUGH CHRIST (ROMANS 8:37).
YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN AUTHORITY IN JESUS' NAME.
THE ENEMY IS DEFEATED

His lies don't define you.
His shadows don't control you.

Father,
Thank You for reminding us that fear is only a shadow and that Your light is greater than every lie of the enemy.
Forgive us for the times we've allowed fear to speak louder than Your promises. Renew our minds with Your truth. Help us recognize every thought that doesn't come from You and give us the courage to reject it immediately.
Teach us to walk by faith instead of by fear.
Help us remember that we are Your sons and daughters, chosen, loved, forgiven, and empowered through Jesus Christ.
When shadows try to surround us, remind us that shadows have no power because You are the Light of the world.
Strengthen us to step boldly into every calling You have placed on our lives.
May we live courageously, love boldly, and trust You completely.
In Jesus' mighty name,

Amen.

The next time fear begins whispering in your ear...

The next time doubt tries to stop you...

The next time the enemy paints frightening pictures in your mind...

Remember four simple words:

Dog shadows don't bite.

Keep walking.

Keep trusting.

Keep believing.

The Light has already won.
