Recently, I had the privilege to interview Diane Gilbertz. Their heartfelt discussion illuminated the transformative power of faith, the importance of honoring loved ones, and the divine appointments that shape our lives.
A Journey of Faith and Growth
Diane Gilbertz’s story begins with humble roots—growing up in a home where faith was present but not deeply practiced. Her journey toward a personal relationship with God truly took shape in her adult years. Moving to Sioux Falls, Diane found herself seeking more—a church that spoke directly to her heart. That search led her to Peace Lutheran Church, where she discovered that God's message was speaking directly to her soul. Through Bible studies and community, Diane’s faith blossomed, strengthening her bond with God and her husband. Her story is a reminder that faith isn’t always about hitting rock bottom; sometimes, it’s about recognizing that there’s more—more love, more purpose, more divine guidance.
Deuteronomy 4:29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Navigating Tragedy with Faith
Diane’s faith was deeply tested when tragedy struck her family—the loss of her niece, Shelby, in a devastating car accident. Her initial pain and anger toward God were profound, but she shared how she processed these emotions through honest prayer and reflection. It was in sitting still, seeking God's presence amidst her grief, that she began to hear His still small voice.
Her story resonates with many who have faced similar heartbreak. Diane emphasized that even in our darkest moments, God’s presence is near. His voice may not roar from the heavens but whisper softly through songs, people, and Scripture.

Turning Pain into Purpose
Rather than allowing her grief to consume her, Diane chose to honor Shelby’s legacy in a beautiful way. She dedicated her year to Shelby by creating an acronym, inspiring her students to live positively and passionately—just like Shelby did. They even started an endowment scholarship in Shelby’s name for early childhood education, ensuring her love for children and her dreams live on.
Diane’s story highlights a vital truth: our pain can be transformed into purpose. When we remember that each life has a divine purpose, we can choose to celebrate rather than mourn—living with passion and faith.
Jeremiah 33:3 Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Living Like Shelby
Shelby’s life was a testament to living with purpose, faith, and joy. Her Bible verse—Philippians 4:13—"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,"—became a guiding light for Diane and her family. Today, they honor her memory by living out her legacy, sharing her story, and encouraging others to "live like Shelby."
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

A Final Reflection
Diane’s journey reminds us that God's love is always present, even in our darkest hours. His purpose for each of us is unique, and through faith, hope, and love, we can turn pain into something beautiful.
As Diane said, “God’s purpose is still happening here on earth—divine appointments are happening because of our faith and actions.” Let us embrace our divine purpose, honor those who have touched our lives, and live boldly with faith, just like Shelby.
